The Number 1 reason is a bit constructed. You get cheaper away with a Professional + DataAbstract from RemObjects, which is a MUCH better solution than DataSnap. It is cross-platform, it is more scalable, it runs not only on Windows x86 systems but also on Linux servers and the mac - even in 64bit, and it's performance is much better than DataSnap.

I agree PhoenixHawk the datasnap bit does seem a rather constructed reason to me too.

I also think DataAbstract is overall a much better solution.

Other thing to Bear in mind is that if release schedules follow the usual pattern you will only have arround 7 months at most of in band fixes/updates before XE2 arrives if you dont have/get Software Assurance too.

Last observation is the pricing. Taking the Upgrade from Delphi XE Pro to Delphi XE Enterprise as an example in Euro and Dollars from the corresponding embarcadero stores we have :

$599 exc Taxes.
E599 exc Taxes.

Thus $1 = E1 conversion rate.

Average Month Dollar to Euro rates from Start Jan 2010 to End Jan 2011 range from

$1.22 to $1.42 = E1.00

with a closing rate today of

$1.36 = E1.00

That seems a rather step mark up yet again to me.

Is it just me or Embarcadero is transforming Delphi into a "just sell the damn thing"?!

I can easily see in the next 1 or 2 releases another new feature that will kinda' force companies to buy the new version...

Dorin,
I was thinking exactly the same. It does seem to me to be "Just sell Delphi/C++ Builder/RAD Studio however you can" in recent times.

I also wonder what 'must buy features' with be in XE2 products ? I say this as I see signs that the cross platform GUI work might be in process of reset/change of direction with the announcement that EMBA bought IP of KSDev and what Eugene put on front page of his website.

We usually have new releases once a year and then throughout the year it definitely is our job from the marketing side to sell Delphi and RAD Studio.

To do that, we sometimes focus on different aspects of the product and different offers rather than continuing with exactly the same messages and offers for an entire year.

When we released XE, there was an introductory price on Professional upgrades. Now we're focusing on some of the Enterprise edition functionality and an offer to encourage people to buy Enterprise.

Hopefully overall people see it as a good thing that we're continuing to increase our marketing activities, reaching out to new users with the Starter editions, and trying new things to continue growing the Delphi, C++Builder and RAD Studio business like we did last year.
